Thinking of a short getaway from Singapore over the weekend? Pulau Ubin! Although this neighbouring island is small, it’s well worth exploring and offers a very different experience. Covering an area of 10.2 square kilometres, this boomerang-shaped island of 1,020 hectares is located in the Johor Strait, off the north-eastern coast of mainland Singapore. From Changi Point Ferry Terminal, a 10-minute ride on a bumboat will bring you straight to the shores of Pulau Ubin. There are two types of tickets: a standard fare and a higher-priced option. With the standard fare, you’ll need to wait until the boat is full before it departs, but if you’re in a hurry, you can opt for the more expensive ticket and leave immediately.

What can you do on the island? Cycling is a great way to explore Pulau Ubin at your own pace. Bicycle rental shops offer a wide variety of options to suit all visitors — mountain bikes, tandem bicycles, tricycles, and even bicycles fitted with baby strollers. However, do note that there are many slopes and the roads are not as flat as places like East Coast Park. If you prefer hiking, be sure to wear proper hiking shoes or sports shoes for safety. There is so much natural beauty to take in. A walk of about 40 minutes will bring you to the Chek Jawa Wetlands, where you’ll find natural rocky shores and mangrove swamps at the end of the boardwalk, along with breathtaking sea views. Along the way, you’ll encounter more scenic views and interesting, unique plant life. There are also several rest shelters along the route for visitors to take a break and have a drink of water.

However, do be mindful on this slow-paced island — it’s very easy to forget all your worldly worries here.
